To and FRO!

I have so much on my heart to share.... but not enough time to put it into an email...
for now... how about a smile!  I hope to send a trip update in the next day or so! Thanks for understanding!

Today we were reminiscing about when Levi first came home... we watched some recordings of him saying his numbers and alphabet all with that sweet Amharic accent...and a little boys voice!  Someday I will figure out how to load that up onto the blog... but for now how about a couple of pictures to make you smile!

Getting to the FRO!

A Dose of Hard Truth....

Truth.....
As I pondered what or how to write this post I was burdened for the least of these.... yes.. I know many of you are saying "so what else in new"  Laurie you are burdened for them everyday... but I was more burdened for the hearts of those who "see" but turn away.... more on that in another post...but honestly, when I see pictures of the children who are "cast out"  and "hidden" away from their birth because they are different.... I ask myself, why?  WHY... so they aren't going to be on the star traveling team for baseball or soccer.... So they may never grace the cover of a popular magazine...  Why do they have to be labeled as unwanted, unlovable undesired?  Why do they have to live each and every day of their young lives in a place where they are hidden away from the world?  Where they are not picked up and not played with and not held by 2 very special people in their lives... a mommy and a daddy.  They don't ask for much... really they don't.  In fact they don't ask for anything.... but they deserve so much more than what they are given!  I know that God has a plan for each and every one of them.  I know that there are families out there for each of them.  I know that not everyone can be the parents of an orphan. But I do know that each of us is called to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others with less than we have.  God's word clearly tells us to care for the orphan...but also to feed, clothe and care for "the least of these"  If you read this part of Matthew 25 you will see what I think are consequences to our lack of "application".  See what you think....

Matthew 25:31-46

New Living Translation (NLT)

The Final Judgment

31 “But when the Son of Man[a] comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit upon his glorious throne. 32 All the nations[b] will be gathered in his presence, and he will separate the people as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will place the sheep at his right hand and the goats at his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’
37 “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’
40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters,[c] you were doing it to me!’
41 “Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his demons.[d] 42 For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me. I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me a drink. 43 I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home. I was naked, and you didn’t give me clothing. I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’
44 “Then they will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?’
45 “And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’
46 “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous will go into eternal life.”

Some hard words to hear... but really if we are honest we all do this everyday... we get busy.. life is busy... kids, spouses, school, family time, etc...  But I hope that God will prick my heart with this each time I "miss" an opportunity... That my heart will be broken for those who suffer each day while I am able to go on... and continue each day over and over and over again!  So many times people will ask.... "why"  why would you guys adopt AGAIN!  (so much to say on that...but later) the short answer is because HE owns my life.... I hope that I die spent for the Lord!  I hope that I will get better at not missing an opportunity to feed, clothe and care for any of those in need that HE puts before me!

We will be leaving on March 29th! In just over 2 weeks. We have received some donations for the children over there and are thankful that we can bring them blessing!  But I would love to have more suitcases packed with donations than of my own clothes!  Just in case you thought about it and didn't have a chance to "go through those closets and dressers" you still can!  We still have time!  I want to extend this invitation again for donations for the children in the boys' orphanage.  We really do not have a true understanding of their daily lives... that will be a revelation of raw truth when we go!
Here are the needs again....
*clothing size 0-6 boys or girls
* money to purchase diapers and creams over there as our dollar will go much farther over there!
*money to help offset the cost for extra luggage

just a note.... when we brought donations to Ethiopia for Levi's transition home, we had 5 extra
bags! The sweet people at American Airlines waived our fees all the way to Ethiopia on our first
trip! But not on the second trip (different airline). We know and have faith that should God choose
to do that again. we will use the money to the benefit of the children in the orphanage there!

Thank you for considering and again, you may email me privately at acts16.31@sbcglobal.net

It's Time!!

Deuteronomy 7:9
Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those
who love him and obey his commands.

Great News! We have our official referral!
I am so thankful for His faithfulness and that we can bring glory
to Him through our story and journey! Only God could write a story as beautiful as ours!
At the end of this month, I will be traveling to meet and hold my boys for the first time!
I cannot tell you how my heart is bursting with love and anticipation for these little guys.
I cannot wait to hold them ~one or two at a time!
I do have a little experience with holding two at a time!

I remember back in August when their pictures first came across my desk.
I knew, I just knew there was something about them. I didn't know what it was at first, and I
definitely didn't think that we would be adopting them as we were already planning to go back to
Ethiopia. But God led us to a place we never would have imagined. As Roger and I talked one day about "what in the world was God doing" I think he summed it up perfectly. He described it like this... "It is like God is leading us down a long hallway. He has a specific room that he is taking us to. We are excited and believe that we know exactly where we are going. Then, out of the blue God takes a turn in the completely opposite direction that we thought!" That was exactly how I felt too. We both knew that God was leading this journey. We were both willing to follow Him wherever He wanted us to go and do whatever He would ask of us! I am so amazed at my husband's heart and willingness to follow God on this journey and lead me in this new and unfamiliar area of special needs adoption! (I am not always the easiest person to lead.... )

As soon as we began the paperwork and got the ball rolling they were mine! I held them in my
heart. I kept their pictures on the fridge and at my desk and in my purse. As our journey began
to unfold, I knew I was their mommy! I knew that I already loved them with a mothers heart.

It is hard to explain what it feels like when you begin an adoption journey and have this love for this little person or people that you have never seen or touched. But God does something in your heart. He is love and He gives us the ability to love because He first loved us!

What I didn't know was how God would change my heart for them. I cannot explain it fully, but something changed about a month ago. I suppose it could be like when you are pregnant and you start to feel your baby moving inside of you for the first time. Those subtle, but intentional movements inside of you. Something changed in my heart. God placed and grew this desire all along in my heart for the boys, but about a month ago, it turned into a longing and yearning for them. For them to be with me... and for me to be with them. I know now that He was preparing me and my heart for the news of our official referral and the first trip to see them!

I will be traveling the first week in April to meet our boys! I cannot even begin to express to you how my heart is bursting for them! Roger will be staying back this trip and one of my dear friends Amy, will be traveling with me. She will be a wonderful travel companion and one who has a heart for the orphan and a passion to see each and every one placed with a loving family!

There is much to do to prepare our families for our absence! Schedules to plan, meals to prepare, and much needed time for each of us to just be together with our families before our trip. We would ask that you please keep us in your prayers as we prepare! If you would still like to help with donations for the children at David and Jonathans orphanage we would welcome them!
Please contact me via the comments on the blog or privately.

I am so excited to meet our boys and I look forward to sharing it with you all who have been such a wonderful support for our family and for David and Jonathan!

Thankfully,

Some Random Information!

Just a couple of things to pass along tonight...

Adoption news!  Recently we have heard that there has been some "political unrest" in the boys home country.  With this happening it could mean a potential for delay in getting our official referral.  We are not really sure what that could mean as far as time.  But all that to say, I know that this is not outside of God's plan for our family.  He knows all that is happening and He knows what is best for us!  We rest in His sovereignty!

T-Shirt Sale and Challenge!  There has been a great response to the t-shirts.  They look great! There are still more for purchasing and you can still do the challenge when it is more convenient for you!  You can learn more here.

Orphanage Donations.....
We are hoping to take donations to the boys orphanage.  The greatest needs for the children there are clothes and diapers and creams.  The clothes are easy for us to take there but it is easier, and cheaper, to purchase the diapers and creams once we are there. We wanted to share this opportunity with all of you.  If you are beginning your spring cleaning (to force spring on us) and you find outgrown children's clothing we know children who could benefit from them!  Specifically we are looking for sizes infant through 6!  We are also looking for extra luggage that we can use and then just leave over there.  We would humbly accept any monetary donations to help pay for the diapers, creams and meds as well as the extra costs for luggage.  As always, do as your heart is led!  Thank you for caring for those who are forgotten by most, but not by the Father!

In His Embrace,
laurie

How Far Would You Go......

My friends, adoption is redemption!
It is costly, exhausting, expensive, and outrageous.
Buying back lives costs so much
When God set out to redeem us, it killed Him
Derek Loux

I don't think I have shared too much about the battle that goes on in our home on a daily basis for our little guy Levi. I am not sure how to put this all into words so please forgive me if I use too many real words...too much description...or just plain too many words.  Some will be hard to hear... but we have to speak in truth.  We just have to.

For those who do not know his story I will give the short version.  We brought Levi home in September of 2011!  He is a amazing and handsome little boy.  He was the most obedient and helpful little guy for a while after we got home. ( the honeymoon phase ) He didn't seem to be bonding with us....asking if he was going to live with friends or have another mommy and daddy.  So we changed things up a bit to work on building a bond of attachment.  After about 9 months home he started to share some of his past with us.  What we know was that he was with a woman whose behavior seemed to be a bit "odd" and the police brought her and Levi to their office to give them food and shelter...her behavior got more strange and they took her into their custody.... she escaped leaving Levi behind. Thank you Jesus! This woman was not his birth mom.  He never EVER has called her anything but "Elfray"... and when I would ask him "is she your mama" he would say very matter of fact, no.  We don't know anything about his birth parents.  The police took care of him for a few days  and brought him to the orphanage and we got his referral...and we have loved him in our hearts ever since.

Before he came to America, Levi lived a life that most of us could not even begin to comprehend.  We haven't even seen movies with the horrific scenes he has lived in "real life". He has suffered much at the hands of adults and other children.... people that should have protected him.  He has been through unspeakable things.  He has seen and experienced evil up close.  Even while living in the place that should have been a sanctuary for him...a place of refuge, he met with more abuse.   He has told of things and used words that NO 5yr. old should ever hear much less use.  He just shouldn't even know these things.  He asked questions about things that to him, were "normal".  Things that most adults never even have to question in their lifetime.  He spoke of the boy who was 7-8 years older than him and how he pursued Levi every. single. day. and. night.  He told me that he doesn't like to sleep.  Hhmmm.... I wonder why?.....  He told me that he doesn't need parents. That he can take care of himself thank you very much!  He can just go live in the "tall grass" and he will be fine. He seriously doesn't see what all the fuss is about with having to have adults be the boss of him! He never needed them before so why now. Sounds like a pretty smart and articulate little boy doesn't he.  ( For those of us who love and care for children who come from hard places we translate smart and articulate into  "aware" "survival skills" "doing what it takes to stay alive" and "knowing who you are dealing with")

Believe it or not, this revelation is good!  While hearing all of the horrible stories and watching him describe events is really really hard, it is so good for this to come out.  We have been working on this with him since last summer.  We have seen God redeem this little boys life.  Little by little he is overcoming all that has happened to him.  Little by little he is reclaiming back those years of his life that were taken from him.  Stolen from him. The innocence that was lost....  The first moments of the milestones of children from when they are just tiny tiny babies, to taking their first steps, their first funny words... All of that God is giving back to Levi!  It is the day of reckoning for him!  After all that he has been through....all that was taken from him.... he is redeemed!

We are working with a therapist who we LOVE.  She has helped us work through so much with Levi. We work on attachment with this little boy who has NEVER known what love is.  But before we can attach we have to weed out the person or persons in his life that have been the most influential to him. We work on trying to give him the years and experiences that he missed out on!  And yes, we have had to look at some really disturbing realities.  We have had to swallow hard when he tells us yet another story of perverse and horrendous abuse. We have had to do hard things. REALLY hard things. Things that would test the patience of anyone.  Enduring fits of rage and fits of self hurting.  Spiting, pinching, scratching....biting. Wrestling matches. Day after day.... then a reprieve.  Then something else will come up and we start the work to bring what hides in the darkness into the light.  We will not stand by in ignorance. We will not just look the other way.  We do not speak of how well adjusted he is.  We will not dump him into the culture of busyness and social activities that eat up childhoods in an effort to give him what most deem "a normal life".  We miss many parties and family gatherings.  We keep him close.   We choose to fight!  We choose to look the enemy square in the face and come on full steam!  God is on our side. God has already won! We stand in the gap for this little boy.  Everyday we are literally fighting for HIS LIFE.  Some days I ask myself "did that really just happen?  Did I just say that?  Did he just do that?  We are literally fighting the enemies of his past for that number one place in his life. We are willing to go to hell and back to save this little boy!

This little child of God. This child who is really only ours for a little while...all along he belongs to God.  This once orphan........ now lives a life of freedom.  Levi has a Savior!  He has a rescuer!  He has a heart that wants to do good and righteous things.  He is the bravest little person I know! God has a plan for him...no doubt...he will be a mover and shaker!...but mostly a talker!  He has lots to say! We pray for his birth parents.  He prays that they know that he is ok and that they know Jesus! And the latest prayer request he makes if for his biggest abuser to stop hurting children. That he would change his life by knowing Jesus!  How many of us as adults do this... every day!?  He is special!

Love for Enemies   Matthew 5:43-45

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor] and hate your enemy.’  But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,  that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous         and the unrighteous.

With every ounce of energy we fight the demons of his past... and we see victory!  As God shows his power in Levi's life, we are only thankful to be his parents. We are not perfect.  We don't always do it "right". We are not "special"...just equipped by God!  As my dear friend A and K  say,  "No one would sign up to do what you do".  Yes, it is hard work...It is intentional parenting every day....every minute.  It is dying to self over and over again to do what needs to be done. Whatever they need no Matter What it takes!  We will go to the ends of this earth for our children. Over and Over and Over again.

HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO...........

Joel 2:28-32

The Day of the Lord

28 “And afterward,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.
29 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days.
30 I will show wonders in the heavens
    and on the earth,
blood and fire and billows of smoke.
31 The sun will be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood
before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.
32 And everyone who calls
    on the name of the Lord will be saved;
for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
    there will be deliverance,
    as the Lord has said,
even among the survivors
    whom the Lord calls.

A Friend's Post..

There are links to some of the blogs I read on a pretty regular basis on the right side of my blogpage.  Some of these ladies have a tremendous voice in the world of the orphan!  I would love to share this post with you all today...

Allot of people tell me how great they think we are for adopting...or how crazy.....or that they give us "all of the credit in the world" ..... or "I could never do that!"......what you are doing is so amazing.......

we are just doing what we are called to do....and each of us is called to do something...
I hope this post will remind you of what is to come...and that we all play a part....not everyone has the same role..but we all have a role!

just click here to read it
